Fave Fall Movies

by  |

While we can’t deny the appeal of going out with our beaus for a fab night at an uh-mazing hot spot, (not so) deep down, we love the idea of just splitting a bucket of popcorn (sans the extra butter, of course) at our local theater. Now, with the big budget studio releases of summer behind us, we’ve got some serious movie watching decisions to make this season.

So which fall films are worthy enough to spend your hard-earned cash on? We’ve rounded up our top choices for you, so you won’t have to worry about making any tough decisions while you’re standing in line at the box office.

20131018_gravity_thumb Gravity, Oct. 4
Starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney
This thriller not only stars two of our fave actors (have we mentioned how much we love George Clooney?), but it’s also guaranteed to be a fab date movie — after all, watching an astronaut stranded in space after losing sight of her co-pilot will give you and your man an excuse to hold on even tighter to each other!

20131018_12years_thumb 12 Years a Slave, today
Starring Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender, and Brad Pitt
Directed by Steve McQueen (no, not the deceased star of Bullitt — rather, the man behind 2011’s Shame), this film is a surefire Oscar contender. With an uh-mazing cast and a deeply emotional storyline, 12 Years a Slave is one you won’t want to miss! Oh, and don’t forget to bring a box of tissues with you to the theater — you’ll need them for sure!

20131018_fifthestate The Fifth Estate, today
Starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Daniel Brühl
What can we say, we’re suckers for films based on a true story. Benedict Cumberbatch plays Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks (the source behind one of the greatest military secrets leaks in US history). The film will no doubt be full of intrigue and suspense, but the best reason to see it has to be Cumberbatch’s performance as Assange — we’re pretty convinced he might actually be him.

20131018_carrie Carrie, Oct. 18
Starring Chloë Grace Moretz and Julianne Moore
What girl out there can’t relate to having a troubled relationship with her mom at some point or another? As far as remakes go, this take on Stephen King’s classic horror novel couldn’t have asked for a better pair of ladies to breathe some new life into the complicated mother-daughter relationship. And while it’s true that sometimes it’s best to leave a good thing alone, we’re feeling optimistic about this one.

20131018_abouttime About Time, Nov. 1
starring Domhnall Gleeson, Rachel McAdams, and Bill Nighy
If you loved Notting Hill and Love Actually, then this love story with a sci-fi twist (a guy discovers the men in his family can time travel) from director Richard Curtis is going to be right up your alley! It’s also a great investigation into the relationship question: What would you do differently if you could? Because, come on, who hasn’t wondered that very thing?

20131018_diana_thumb Diana, Nov. 1
Starring Naomi Watts and Naveen Andrews
Not only is she absolutely stunning to look at, but Naomi Watts is one heck of an actress (have you seen The Impossible?)! Getting to watch her play one of the most iconic women in history is enough to keep us invested for a couple of hours. Alright, that and her wardrobe.

20131018_thor Thor: The Dark World, Nov. 8
Starring Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, and Tom Hiddleston
Chris. Freaking. Hemsworth. As the god of thunder. Need we say more?

20131018_wolf The Wolf of Wall Street, Nov. 15
Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Jonah Hill, Matthew McConaughey, and Jon Bernthal
Martin Scorsese is back with another true crime tale (his last was 2006’s The Departed), this time about the highs and lows of securities fraud on Wall Street in the early ’90s. The cast is chock full of uh-mazing actors who happen to be pretty easy on the eyes, too. Depending on your attention level, this is a good one to see with either your boyfriend (for the action) or your girlfriends (for the eye candy). Now we call that a win-win!

20131018_bookthief The Book Thief, Nov. 15
Starring Geoffrey Rush, Emily Watson, and Sophie Nélisse
This adaptation of Markus Zusak’s 2006 novel toes the line between kid-friendly and adult, which is what makes it a perfect film for pretty much anyone, especially those who want to see a great love story about a girl and her books. See, not every leading lady needs a leading man!

20131018_her_thumb Her, Nov. 20
Starring Joaquin Phoenix, Scarlett Johansson, Amy Adams, and Rooney Mara
In this age of online dating, Her takes things a step further: what if you fell in love with the computer itself? ScarJo voices Samantha, an almost-human computer system who also happens to be the love interest of nearly-divorced introvert Theodore (Joaquin Phoenix). It’s an interesting take on cyber romance — and a good one to see with a real person.

20131018_catchingfire_thumb The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, Nov. 22
Starring Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, and Sam Claflin
OK, if you haven’t read Suzanne Collins’ best-selling YA trilogy, you need to stop what you’re doing and buy the books now (or borrow them — we’re sure someone you know has them already). Catching Fire is the second film in the four-part series about a girl who dares to stand up against her oppressive government. The film and the books are a true testament to girl power, and the fact that Academy Award-winning actress Jennifer Lawrence just happens to be that girl makes this one trilogy you, your girlfriends, and your daughters won’t want to miss!

20131018_frozen_thumb Frozen, Nov. 27
Starring Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel, Jonathan Groff, and Josh Gad
We couldn’t resist including one for the kiddos. Disney’s Frozen tells the story of snow queen Elsa (Idina Menzel), who curses her kingdom with eternal winter. It’s up to her sister Anna (Kristen Bell) to end the spell and save the land. It’s a cute story (based on Hans Christian Andersen’s The Snow Queen), and we think it’s a fab movie for Disney fans of all ages!
