Sayonara, Sugar

by  |

What’s as addictive as Facebook and more likely to add to your butt than a pair of Justin Bieber harem pants? Sugar. Americans eat more than 22 teaspoons of sugar each day, according to the American Heart Association. That’s nearly 84 pounds of sugar per year.

Cutting out sugar doesn’t have to be as hard as watching the last Breaking Bad episode. Here are some easy ways to do it.

1. Half the amount of sugar in a dessert recipe. Replace the other half with applesauce or pureed prunes.

2. Switch your cereal to one that has less than 8 grams of sugar per serving. Double props if you can switch to one with no added sugars at all.

3. Skip the cosmos, Carrie Bradshaw. (Although you could try this "skinny" recipe makeover). Stick to beer, wine, or liquor mixed with unsweetened seltzer.

4. Refrain from keeping sugary foods in your purse, office drawer, and/or home. This is especially true of ice cream. Just don’t do it because everyone has a tendency to overdo the rocky road.

5. Eat a piece of fruit, such as an apple, grapes, or berries when you have a craving for something sweet. If this doesn’t satisfy your sweet craving, go for the cookie.

6. Take 1,000-2,000mg of l-glutamine between meals, said Dr. Frank Lipman. This amino acid has been shown to reduce sugar cravings.

Worried you’ll feel cranky without your sugar fix? Try these feel-good foods.
