Throwing Down a Challenge

by  |

If the only exercise you’ve been getting lately has been running your mouth with excuses for not hitting the gym, then you need some inspiration to get your hips moving more than your lips.

We were certainly feeling up to working out when Cycle House invited us to the Zico Charity Spin Ride hosted by Maria Menounos benefiting the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF). Looking at the beautiful Miss Menounos and her rock hard abs as well as the Greek god of an instructor were enough to make us push it to the max, but the real inspiration was 25-year-old Danielle McLaughlin.

Danielle’s left foot was amputated in 2004 after a recurrence of synovial sarcoma, a cancer that affects the soft tissues that line joints. After the surgery, she struggled to redefine herself, especially since she had led such an active life up until then. But after rehabilitating her leg and participating in weekly spin classes, Danielle promised herself she would race in her first triathlon in 2011. After that race, she received a grant from the Challenged Athletes Foundation for a running prosthetic and also attended a Paratriathlon Camp where she was able to learn from and train with other paratriathletes.

Lo and behold, the determined athlete took first place in class for below-knee amputees and went on to compete in Beijing for the ITU Paratriathlon World Championships where she won the gold medal! She now has her eyes set on competing in the Paralympics in Rio in 2016.

With Zico coconut water keeping us hydrated through our intense spin session, Maria’s beautiful bod a vision in the dimly lit room, and Danielle up front pedaling harder, better, and faster than anyone else, we felt challenged and inspired to better ourselves and never give up on our dreams!
