It’s Getting Hot in Herre
The fab and fit benefits of infrared sauna therapy
When it comes to weight loss, clearing up your maj stressed out skin, or detoxing from last weekend’s one-tequila-two-tequila-three-tequila-floor situation, we definitely wish that fairy godmothers actually existed.
But, there is a way to burn around 600 calories by just sitting still. And as it turns out, no fairy godmother is needed. After sitting in a magic chamber, er, an infrared sauna, you will bippity boppity boop your way to a healthier, more beautiful you.
We talked to Shamina Ledesma of The Sweat Shop in Los Angeles and tried a few sessions to see what all the sweat was about.
What are the benefits? “Infrared sauna therapy stimulates circulation, liquefies hardened fat (cellulite) and toxicity (heavy metals) and allows them to flow out via sweat. It also does not dry out your mucous membranes like traditional heat saunas.”
Why not just sit in a sauna at your regular gym? Instead of the direct heat from a regular sauna, “Infrared saunas heat your body at the core (like a "healthy fever") thus stimulating a much deeper detox process," Shamina said.
What should a sweat sched look like? Shamina recommended 30- to 45-minute sessions two to three times a week. Shamina also suggested not eating for about 30 minutes before your session.
Want to increase the benefits? Try a shot of water and cayenne pepper which will “stimulate heat and circulation beforehand for a deeper sweat," Shamina said.
So does it work? Well, after just a few sessions we noticed results in the form of clearer skin, better sleep, and weight loss (woo hoo!). And it got our heart rate up like a brisk walk or a barre class! But most importantly, it just felt great to take some time out to just zen out, unplug, and relax.
