Glorious Gluten-Free Goodies
Favorites for every mood
We all know the feeling when we are jonesing for something sweet or salty (or both!) to munch on. And we are like, “Get out of our way, world, we’ve got food on the brain!” Much like a crazy drug habit (or rather what we would imagine a crazy drug habit to be, based on all those Intervention type series we’ve seen) sometimes we just need a sweet/salty fix.
But when you’re eating gluten-free, oftentimes treats that satisfy your craving and don’t leave you with an awful stomachache or skin reminiscent of your ninth-grade complexion is absolutely impossible to come by.
The good news is that with more and more people going gluten-free, LA has gotten the memo! Restaurants now offer fab gluten-free options, markets are carrying gluten-free snacks and in the best news since Here Comes Honey Boo Boo’s additional episodes announcement, there are bakeries dedicated to gluten-free goodness! So do the happy dance (Gangnam style) because it just got a whole lot easier to get your fix, no matter what type of snack you’re craving.
Here are our local gluten-free faves:
For a sweet tooth: Fonuts
8104 W. 3rd St.
Fonuts serves up gluten-free donuts that are steamed or baked and never fried. They are next level, I’d-rather-eat-12-of-these-than-look-good-in-my-skinny-jeans-delicious, and our non-GF friends tell us that the gluten-free options are even better than the non-gluten free! Our favorites? Lemon, chocolate coconut, banana chocolate chip, and vanilla latte (but really you simply can’t go wrong here).
For a salty fix: Beach Bum Foods
Beach Bum Foods are made right here here in sunny SoCal. And their debut dip, Love, Laughter, and Lentils, is beyond delicious, totally satisfying, and incredibly healthy. Try it with veggies, chips, or on a GF sammie. Flavors include basil avocado (it’s a FabFitFun fave), Spicy Avocado, and Original Avocado. And at only 35 calories a serving, 0 fat and 2 grams of both fiber and protein, it’s snacking sans guilt — the best kind of snacking there is! Locations include: Coopportunity, 1525 Broadway, Santa Monica; Erewhon Natural Foods Market, 7660-B Beverly Blvd., Mid-Wilshire; and Pacific Coast Greens, 22601 Pacific Coast Highway, Malibu.
Favorite restaurant: Hugo’s
Locations in West Hollywood, Studio City, and Agoura Hills
Hugo’s serves up tons of GF dishes and just about every dish can be modified to be gluten-free. But not to worry, your non-GF friends won’t balk when you suggest this stop for dinner or brunch because both their non-GF and GF dishes will leave you saying, “When can we come back?! Tomorrow? Perfect.” We are ub-sessed with the kelp noodles. They taste like pasta with a fraction of the calories and no gluten. It’s the seventh wonder of the world.
Favorite birthday treat: Cake Pops from Cupcakes Couture
1120 Manhattan Ave., Manhattan Beach
We all know cake pops are the new thing in desserts, but nothing is worse than showing up to a party and watching your friends having all the cake pop fun. Well get your gluten-free pop on with Cupcakes Couture. The Manhattan Beach bakery also specializes in GF cupcakes, macarons, and made to order cakes for any occasion! You know it’s good if they supplied the cupcakes for G&B’s baby shower!
Now go get your gluten-free snack on!
