Tuesday Tunes: Gangnam Style
The South Korean ‘horse-riding dance’ sweeps the globe
It has officially been 15 years since the Macarena had us waving our arms and swivelling our hips at quinceañeras, weddings, and bar and bat mitzvahs. (We know, time flies when you’re having fun!)
And it looks as though we are ready for a new foreign song to dance and sing along with. May we introduce: Gangnam Style!
The catchy, colorful, kooky, Korean pop tune by rapper PSY has swept not only the nation, but the globe! With more than 143 million views in just one month and countless parody videos featuring the signature “horseback-riding dance,” Gagnam Style is clearly the new Call Me Maybe (thank goodness!).
Oh, and in case you don’t speak Korean, allow us to translate. The song is about a girl from Gangnam, a neighborhood in the South Korean capital of Seoul — a place we’ll compare to the Upper East Side. She’s trendy, and you guessed it, sexy! Now we have to wonder if PSY’s charming ways and horseback-riding dance reeled the special lady in!
