Love in Another Language
Go off the beaten path with these romantic comedies from abroad
With supermarkets lining their aisles with heart-shaped chocolates and radio stations recycling oldie anthems of amor, it’s time to load up your Netflix queue with feel-good flicks about loooooovvve!
However, if you’ve exhausted your list of rom-coms from Hollywood and you’ve practically memorized all of Sandra B’s lines from The Proposal, then we’ve got one of our own. Try popping in these foreign romantic comedies. You may not understand a word they’re saying, but everyone speaks the language of love, non?
My Sassy Girl (South Korea): Move over, Zooey Deschanel, because there’s a new quirky highness in town! Meet “the girl,” who’s beautiful, mysterious, and has eccentric mood swings. After a chance meeting on the subway, the girl (who remains nameless) starts dating the protagonist, Kyun-Woo. Their idiosyncratic love story is full of hilarious episodes, a dash of drama, and perhaps a bit of fate.
Mostly Martha (Germany): You might be familiar with the American remake, No Reservations, but check out the original about a no-nonsense workaholic chef whose lackluster life spices up when an Italian sous chef enters the kitchen.
Love Me if You Dare (France): As children, Julien lends Sophie a small tin box, and when Sophie dares him to prove how important the box is to him, the game begins. Throughout their friendship, they pass the box back and forth with outrageous, hilarious, and downright dangerous pranks with the ultimate dare being falling in love.
Bride and Prejudice (India): Nineteenth-century England is so two centuries ago. Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice heads southeast in this Bollywood reinterpretation. Yes, you get the oh-so-cute, droolworthy Mr. Darcy and fun interjections of bhangra song and dance.
