How models stay gorgeous through grueling hours

Fashion Week is super glamorous, but it’s also exhausting. Especially for the models. They typically run around from show in heels going on zero hours of sleep, and with noticeable blisters and undereye circles. But they always seem to look super polished once it’s showtime, so we decided to investigate backstage to see what was going on. From a little pink sponge to green juice, find out what what products are being used backstage to rejuvenate models before they strut down the catwalk.

The Beauty Blender at New York Fashion Week Spring 2014
BeautyBlender: Never underestimate the power of this tiny pink makeup sponge. Makeup artists use the BeautyBlender on models to achieve perfect foundation coverage, as it doesn’t ever leave streaks. If you wet the sponge before applying, it also creates a gorgeous dewy finish.

Juice: Brands like Organic Avenue (pictured above; backstage at Lela Rose), Blueprint Cleanse, and Juice Press have taken over backstage. Models have been downing healthy juices all week in order to stay revived and to keep their skin glowing.

Double Letter Creams: With lots of “no makeup” makeup looks for spring 2014, it was important for models to have flawless looking skin. We caught up with Sarah Lucero of Stila Cosmetics backstage at Alice + Olivia to find out the secret to models’ perfect-looking skin. Her trick? Stila CC Cream, as it evens out the skin tone but keeps the face looking super natural.

Smith’s Rosebud Salve: Every makeup artist we’ve encountered so far has this wonder salve stashed in their kit. It’s used on models for all sorts of things such a a lip balm, eyelid gloss, skin moisturizer, and a hair flyaway smoother. The uses are endless, and it’s easy to travel with.

Dry Shampoo: It’s no big secret, as we love dry shampoo and use it all the time. But we learned backstage that it’s mostly used to provide texture and to make models’ hair look more lived-in looking for certain looks. We spotted Kerastase Powder Bluff all over the place, which also helps fight frizz and humidity (much needed in NYC right now!).
