Comic-Con to Feature a Cosplay Couture Fashion Show
Anyone who’s been to Comic-Con knows it’s not uncommon to see hundreds of Princess Leias, Darth Vaders, and Batmans (Batmen?) wandering the streets of San Diego fully decked out in role-playing gear.
That’s because the SoCal convention has always been a staple in the cosplay (costume play) world of dedicated fans of beloved superheroes. But this year, Her Universe is upping the ante by putting on a full-scale geek couture fashion and design competition.
Founder Ashley Eckstein said,
“Fangirls are already using the halls of San Diego Comic-Con International as their runway to showcase custom fashions. We wanted to give these designers a bigger stage to share their talent and also provide an educational experience in the fashion industry.”
The competition will officially kick off July 24, where 30 top designers will be selected to compete in the show. Don’t expect to see any old rag you can get from a Halloween store, according to the rules the runway-ready costumes must be “Geek Couture.”
Although men and women are welcome to enter, the designs must only feature womenswear (because let’s face it, seeing Spider-Man as a man is so last season). A panel of judges will then choose one winner and the audience will choose another.
In the end, both champions will be given the opportunity to co-design a Her Universe collection with Eckstein and Hot Topic. It will be more epic than the legendary battle between Thor and Loki, Batman and The Joker, and Lindsay Lohan and Oprah!
