Beauty Tuesday: Happiness Is the Best Makeup
Classic beauty Audrey Hepburn said it best: “Happy girls are the prettiest girls!” And while we think that women all around the world are gorge, there is something to be said for a gal who has a smile on her face even in 24 hour darkness. (Yes, the northernmost city of Sweden sometimes gets zero hours of sunlight — zero.)
And according to the 2013 World Happiness Report, released by Columbia University’s Earth Institute, Scandinavian countries are doing this happiness thing right! The top five countries in order of positive outlook on life are:
So it makes sense that the ladies of these countries would have some of the best beauty tips, right? Well we did some investigating and found the secrets from beauties born in each of these cheerful countries.
Denmark: Keep it simple
Adam Levine’s former girlfriend and gorge Danish model, Nina Agdal, keeps her beauty routine pretty simple. In an interview with the Miami Herald, she admitted to not wearing a lot of makeup when she’s not modeling. “I think your skin needs to breathe.” Try to go foundation-free at least on the weekends to give your skin a much-needed break!
Norway: Fill up on fish!
Norwegians love to eat fish, which is a fabulous source of omega-3 fatty acids and improves the health of your hair and nails. Once your nails are in tip-top shape, you can put them on display with some uh-dorable nail art like Norwegian model, blogger, and Vogue correspondent, Hanneli Mustaparta.
Switzerland: Take a cold shower!
Popularized by naturopath Sebastian Kneipp 100 years ago, treating your bod to some icy water improves circulation and raises your metabolism. In fact, we’ve heard that Swiss people used to jump in ice holes to accomplish this! (Um, no thank you.) We say just take a hot shower and switch to cold water at the end. This also seals your hair shaft for shinier hair if you wash it every day like Swiss blogger Kristina Bazan of Kayture. Get some of her hair tips here!
Netherlands: Smooth it out!
Dutch Victoria’s Secret angel Doutzen Kroes swears by her smoothie regime which includes three blends first thing in the morning. She shared the following recipes with Vogue Beauty in January:
“When I wake up, I squeeze a lemon, grapefruit and an orange to make a juice for my husband, my son and I.
Then I mix a green powder [Original Superfood Greens from Whole Foods], wheatgrass [The Power of Grass, Whole Foods], chia seeds and water shake. It’s disgusting but you just have to drink it all at once.
For my third shake I blend banana, chia seed, cacao beans, Camu and Maca oils.
I am always so stuffed after drinking them all one after the other. Then I go to work and have a normal breakfast.”
Sweden: Walk the line!
Got light features like Swedish-born actress Malin Akerman? The star told SheKnows.com that she is loyal to her black eyeliner, which she keeps with her at all times to make sure her eyes pop. Smudge it out to make the look less harsh.
